FGTA is excited to announce that we will be resurfacing all six courts in May 2026!

Here’s everything you need to know:

 Who’s doing the work?

  • The work will be done by Sport Tech Construction, a contractor who has done previous work on the Fort Greene courts and numerous other courts in the New York area.

 What does the resurfacing entail?

  • The courts will undergo a power washing and thorough repair of all cracks, dead spots, and peeling using deep-patch acrylics and leveling binders.

  • It’s not feasible at this time to remove the whole foundation and construct an entirely new base for the courts. That would require a fundamental reshaping of the section of the park where the courts are located, which would be a major capital improvement. The cost would be about six times the cost of the current plan. With that in mind, this project will not change the current drainage system or address the downward slope of the courts.

  • The resurface will use the Titan Trax Shield Tennis surface, an overlay system that will be placed on top of the existing surface. The overlay will be about 3mm thick.

  • Atop the Titan Trax overlay will be a Laykold Acrylic Filler paint, which dictates court speed (slow, medium, fast). As the courts see so much use, we’ve been advised to use a filler/paint texture for slow speed, since the surface will play faster over time with consistent use. Court speed will feel similar to the courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Does the overlay play like a hard court?

  • Yes, the overlay feels exactly like a typical hard court. The same contractor completed the renovation project at St Mary’s Park in the South Bronx using the same overlay product. FGTA board members have gone to those courts and can confirm the overlay surface maintains the feeling of a hard court.

How long will the courts be closed for resurfacing?

  • The work will take 3-4 weeks and is scheduled for May 2026. The weather must be warm enough to lay the Titan Trax product and seal it to the existing courts. It may take longer if rain delays the work.

Will Quick Start lines (the light blue lines for kids’ programming) be included?

  • We’re in discussion with Parks, the Fort Greene Park Conservancy, and other community partners to decide if we’ll be including quick start lines.

How long will the resurfacing last?

  • The resurface comes with a five-year warranty. However, the contractor assures us that similar jobs on courts in worse shape than ours typically last for over 10 years with no new dead spots.

  How much does this cost?

  • The cost of the project is $348,000.

How is FGTA paying for this?

  • Through years of fundraising, we’ve banked enough money to cover the costs of this project. FGTA is also actively working with the USTA to get a portion of the total covered by USTA grants for public court refurbishment.

We want to thank everyone who has donated and participated in our events and ladders at Fort Greene over the past few years. This wouldn’t be possible without you all.
